Welcome Back
It is great to welcome the students back for the 2010 school year and hear about their excellent holidays.  The staff have spent considerable time preparing for a successful year and we thank the schools BOT for their financial support for us to attend the Inspired Teachers
Conference during the last week of January in Palmerston North.  The time spent at this confirmed to me the excellent teaching and learning in practice at St Johns and also gave us a range of next steps to trial.  Very worthwhile!!
Thank you for ensuring that your child is well prepared for the school year.  We value the partnership we have with our parents/caregivers.  The teachers appreciate your support and welcome any questions/queries you may have.  If there ever are concerns, we prefer to
address them early to avoid them becoming greater issues.  The teachers will discuss with you their classroom expectations and programmes at the upcoming Parent/Teacher evening (see below).
Kind Regards -
Michael Fitzgerald, Principal
School Special Character
St Johns Hill School strives for excellence in all it does.  A school curriculum, sound in its design and innovative in its delivery, helps students appreciate that learning is a life long process and is capable of nurturing individuals, their interests and needs.  Literacy and Numeracy are given emphasis and our curriculum policy and programme provides clear direction. The following are essential elements of our school culture which
dovetail well to support the successful delivery of the school curriculum, help to produce Citizens who will contribute positively to society and which further promote and develop student leadership skills.  They are given emphasis at all levels of the school.
 1.  Environmental Education    2.  Health Promoting Schools
 3.  Virtue Programme    4.  Thinking Tools
Education for Sustainability:  This is a key element of our schools
culture.  We believe that every child has the potential to contribute
effectively to society through respect for the environment.  Three key goals are that students will celebrate and enjoy our natural environment, will reduce, reuse and recycle and will create and care for our
landscapes.
Health Promoting Schools:  Health Promoting Schools are schools which display a commitment to enhancing the emotional, social, physical and moral wellbeing of their school community (World Health Organisation).  For Health Promoting Schools to be successful it must be owned by staff, students and the school community.
Virtue Programme:  This is a positive holistic programme which is used to bring out the best in children by giving educators tools and strategies to help them shape positive character.  Virtues we see as the gift of character and each term we have one virtue as a major focus with other virtues revisited regularly.
Thinking Tools:  St Johns Hill School is committed to teaching the students thinking skills and strategies.  We need to equip our students for the future.  The teaching of thinking is one way to ensure quality learning for all.  This is an empowering process, which will provide every student with everlasting skills - the tools for life long learning.

Uniform
1.   Note all students are required to wear plain black sandals in the summer terms.
2.   Regulation school sunhats are compulsory during Terms 1/4.
3. Please ensure all uniform items are well named.  This can be particularly frustrating for both staff and parents during swimming season.
4.   Sports Uniform - All teams except the Hardball Cricket are to wear the current St Johns Hill School red sports shirt and plain black shorts.
Hardball Cricket team wear all whites.

Kea Crossing
Constable Val Overweel is currently training seniors to be selected as Kea Crossing Wardens.  Unfortunately some adjustments to the crossing was required.  Once crossing training is complete you will be informed as to when it will be operating.  The crossing is directly in front of the Bird Aviary.  Retention of this will be reliant on it being used by our community and the parent volunteers to supervise crossing.

Treasured Recipe Cookbooks
A few cookbooks which were not collected at the end of 2009 are now for sale.  Delicious recipes.  One I sampled over the holidays which was delicious is the Bullock family “Mama Mia Dessert”.  Worth buying the book just for that!!
