When a school board is not governing effectively, schools and students suffer. Members of school boards are charged with overseeing the finances and management of a district, as well as strengthening academic achievement for all students attending their local schools--if the board instead becomes focused on personality conflicts or power struggles, the focus shifts from the core mission of educating children.

Unfortunately, even the most dedicated boards sometimes get caught up in dysfunctional behavior. This past year, the board of the Atlanta Public Schools was coping with a major cheating scandal and the announced retirement of its highly-regarded Superintendent. Unfortunately, the board became polarized between two factions, culminating in a leadership crisis. Recently, the agency in charge of accrediting public schools in Georgia stepped in to put the district on probation, threatening the board with the loss of accreditation if it could not keep its eye on the needs of schools and students.
