Vacation Bible School, or VBS, is a Christian outreach program in which children attend daily activities for about four hours each day for one week during the summer. While the primary goals of Vacation Bible School include teaching children about the Christian faith and missionaries, VBS also allows the hosting church the opportunity to draw in new members to the congregation.

The History of Vacation Bible School

According to Christianity Today the first clearly documented instance of an organized Vacation Bible School happened in the 1870’s when a Methodist Episcopal church in Lake Chautauqua, New York held meetings termed “summer institutes”. Because of their success, Mrs. Aylette Hawes opened a Bible school in the mid 1890’s conducting classes in bible study, crafts, music and missions study.
