American High School, a no-budget homage to low-budget teen sex comedies of the early 80s, is surprisingly watchable. Evoking not the upper-tier examples of the genre, such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) or Porky’s (1981), but rather such now-obscure C-grade session fillers as Hardbodies (1984) and California Dreaming (1979), the glaring incompetence of first-time director Sean Patrick Cannon actually adds to proceedings, bringing with it a patina of authentic charm.
Not for the Politically Correct Viewer
Refreshingly politically incorrect, it is a movie with no plot to speak of. Essentially the story covers – in awkwardly haphazard fashion – the final week leading up to graduation at a Californian high school from hell. Protagonist Gwen Adams, played by Jillian Murray (Deep Toad, Knuckle Draggers) – a lead actress of beguilingly comedic promise – is a high school student already married and headed for divorce.
