Calvin Coolidge was born in 1872 in Plymouth Notch, Vermont the son of a farmer and storekeeper. Growing up he helped his father in the store and doing chores on the farm.

An average student in the Plymouth Notch schools he managed to gain entry into Amherst College in nearby Amherst, Massachusetts where he graduated with honors.

Entering Professional Life

for the next two years he read law in a Northampton, Massachusetts law firm and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1897. He soon became involved in local Repetition politics and shortly after 1900 was obtaining political appointments and running for offices at the local level:
