Azumanga Daioh: The Animation is a Japanese TV anime series based on the comic by Kiyohiko Azuma. The comedy series focuses on a group of Japanese high school girls from their first day of high school through to their graduation.
What Is Azumanga Daioh About?
Azumanga Daioh isn't really about anything. Somewhat resembling its original comic strip format, the series plays out more like a collection of sketches or short stories. Each episode is broken into segments documenting trivial (and often rather dubious) goings on at school. For example, Tomo, Osaka and Chiyo’s attempt to practice the perfect yawn; the group effort to cure Osaka’s hiccups; or Miss Yukari’s apparent jealousy when Miss Kurosawa gets a birthday present from her homeroom class.
While individual episodes might revolve around a particular event (such as a study session, a PE lesson in the pool, sports fest or culture fest), don't expect a clearly defined story structure of beginning, middle, climax and resolution. Rather than have a continuing plot arc, the series revolves around the daily lives of its eccentric characters.
And eccentric they are! There’s Chiyo the ten year-old genius. Sakaki, the coolest girl in the class who has a secret obsession with stuffed animals and cats (which incidentally always bite her). Miss Yukari, the hot-headed and rather immature language teacher. And Mr Kimura, who has a disconcerting interest in high school girls. What’s So Interesting About Azumanga Daioh?
In addition to its quirky characters and ‘show about nothing’ format, Azumanga Daioh exhibits some interesting qualities that distinguish it from other high school-set anime.
